    Brno Chair ‑ Flat Bar

Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for his renowned Villa Tugendhat in Brno, Czech Republic, the Brno Chair reflects the groundbreaking simplicity of its original environment. The cantilevered seat bounces slightly with the sitter, and its flat bar frame is offered in a choice of four finishes. Celebrated for its lean profile, clean lines, and meticulous craftsmanship, the Brno Chair is an icon of 20th-century design.

Knoll Mies van der Rohe Flat Bar Brno Chair Tugendhat House History

    Furnishing the Four Seasons

Of the 24 or more Brno Chairs used to furnish the Villa Tugendhat in 1930, one of them, used in the master bedroom, was unique because of its Flat Bar frame. Eighteen years later, the chair was put into production at the request of Philip Johnson for a very special project.

Johnson had been hired to design the interiors of the Seagram Building, a midtown Manhattan skyscraper designed by Mies van der Rohe. On its ground floor was The Four Seasons Restaurant, which Johnson furnished with Saarinen Side Tables and Florence Knoll Sofas and Settees. For the restaurant’s primary seating, he asked Knoll to put the Brno Flat Bar Chair, previously used only at Villa Tugendhat, into production but with added cushioning. With Mies’ approval, the Brno Flat Bar Chair was reintroduced with thicker cushions in 1958, and it continues to be produced that way today.

    Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of architecture, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe brought a less-is-more approach to everything he designed, from furniture to skyscrapers. “Architecture is a language,” wrote Mies van der Rohe. “When you are very good you can be a poet.”
