Knoll Designer Bios

Enrico Franzolini

Recognition of Enrico Franzolini’s artistic talents first came in 1972 when two of his glass pieces were exhibited at the Venice Biennale. With his interests moving more towards architecture and industrial design, he established his own atelier in 1978, specializing in architectural restoration and industrial design. Franzolini has since worked on lighting and furniture collections for some of the most prestigious design companies in the world.

In 1989 Knoll introduced the Franzolini chair, a thoroughly modern interpretation of the bentwood chair. The design, an elegant combination of wood, steel and textiles, featured graceful lines and echoed attributes from several of Franzolini’s historical influencers. A Knoll press release announcing the chair’s introduction stated simply, “Homage to tradition. With a touch of irreverence.”
